What is Indian Head Massage?

neck and shoulders being massaged during an indian head massage delicate touchIndian Head Massage dates back in India to some 4,000 years ago. The Indians used a form of massage incorporated within the ancient healing art of Ayurveda.  Ayurveda is the Hindu practice of health care.  The treatment is also known as champissage from the Hindu word 'champi' meaning massage - which is where the word shampoo comes from.

Indian Head Massage is also performed in the Indian barbers shop. Pungent oils are used on the hair such as mustard and sesame seed and those specifically designed to promote hair growth. Have you ever wondered why Indian women have such healthy looking hair?

It is a therapeutic massage which includes the upper back, shoulders, neck and face and many people complain of tension in these areas when under stress or frustrated, especially when working long hours.

Please see notes at the end for guidance on when having an Indian Head Massage is not advisable

What to expect during an Indian Head Massage Treatment:

You can expect to be comfortably seated in chair in a relaxing atmosphere, ( the therapist may use candles, incense and music). The therapist will use fingers, palms and thumbs with different levels of pressure on the neck, shoulders head and face. If oils are used then access to the shoulder and neck area is required.
